(Article/Huo Rui, Photo/Reporter Xu Lihua) The domestic session of the 15thInternational Conference on Frontiers of Design and Manufacturing (ICFDM 2022) was successfully held in Changchun from August 17thto 19th. A total of nearly 500 experts and scholars attended the conference on-site, and more than 10,000 experts and scholars from China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan and other countries attended via online video.
Organized by Jilin University (JLU),ICFDM 2022 is co-sponsored by Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun University of Technology, Changchun University of Science and Technology, Changchun Institute of Technology and International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing, supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Shien-Ming Wu Foundation of USA and Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society. With the theme of “Basis, Frontier, Exploration and Innovation”, ICFDM 2022 carried out a series of reports and discussions around the frontier fields and hot research directions of design and manufacturing in China. The excellent completed projects funded by NSFC were also presented at the conference.
The attendees of the opening ceremony included Wen Bangchun, Wang Liding, Ren Luquan, Luo Jianbin, Ding Han, Yan Chuliang, Zhang Weihong, Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guo Konghui, Tan Jianrong, Guo Dongming, Jiang Zhuangde, Huang Qingxue, Deng Zongquan, Shan Zhongde, Tu Shandong, Ge Shirong, Liu Hong, Ma Yushan, Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wang Zhonglin, foreign Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhang Liangchi, Academician of Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, Dai Jiansheng, Academician of Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, Wang Qidong, Executive Deputy Director and Miao Hongyan, Deputy Director of the Engineering and Materials Science Department of NSFC, Zuo Xiaowei, Deputy Secretary General of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, Zhang Xi, President of JLU, Zhao Hongwei, Vice President of JLU. The opening ceremony was hosted by Academician Yang Huayong, Chairman of the Steering Committee of ICFDM.
Academician Guo Dongming, Conference Chair of ICFDM, Wang Qidong, Executive Deputy Director of the Engineering and Materials Science Department of NSFC, Ni Jun, Director of Shien-Ming Wu Foundation, Academician Zhang Xi, President of JLU, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. Guo hoped that all participating experts can shoulder the historical responsibility and adhere to the “Four Orientations” to improve the breadth and depth of mechanical engineering discipline in China. Wang pointed out the broad prospect of mechanical design and manufacturing industry and strongly advised attendees to pay more attention to design, strengthen cross-disciplinary integration, guide the direction of the discipline, cultivate more talents and promote academic exchanges and research, contributing to the realization of the strategic goal of building China into a manufacturing power. Wang also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to those who work in mechanical disciplines. According to Ni, all participants should actively promote the international exchange of scientific ideas, adding fuel to the development of the manufacturing competitiveness of our country. Zhang extended his welcome to all the participants and then pointed out the importance of the deep integration between key areas of mechanical discipline such as design, manufacturing and service, and other disciplines such as aerospace and artificial intelligence. He believed that, in the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial revolution, the integration may help to make our advanced manufacturing industry more upscale, intelligent and green and vitalize the development of mechanical engineering discipline and multidisciplinary integration.
After the opening ceremony, Academician Ren Luquan, Academician Wang Zhonglin, Academician Luo Jianbin and Academician Ding Han were invited to give reports on “Practice and Thinking of Bionics”, “Triboelectric Nanogenerator as a Power Source and Sensor for Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing”, “Progress in Super-lubricity Research” and “Robotics and Intelligent Manufacturing: Development Strategy and Research Exploration” respectively. In the reports, their in-depth thinking and research outcomes in related fields are presented.
With nine parallel sub-sessions, the conference carried out more than 150 special reports, including the invited reports of academicians, the concluding reports of projects supported by the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the completed reports of NSFC projects, the oral reports of conference papers and invited reports of the Annual Academic Conference of Mechanical Engineering in Northeast China and the Annual Meeting of the Northeast Revitalization Alliance of Manufacturing Innovation and Design. With an eye on the future development of design and manufacturing industry of our country, experts and scholars exchanged opinions on the core issues, key technologies and trends of their research fields.
Organized by the Second Division of the Engineering and Materials Science Department of NSFC, the participating experts and scholars conducted a secret ballot to select top 10 best projects from outstanding NFSC general projects, youth fund projects and regional fund projects which were completed in 2021. More than 140 conference papers were collected and evaluated in ICFDM 2022, with 59 of them being chosen for on-site oral presentations. After the evaluation and vote of the conference paper evaluation group, 10 of them were rated as excellent papers.
In the evening of August 19, the closing ceremony of the 15thInternational Conference on Frontiers of Design and Manufacturing was held. The ceremony started with relaxing conference bloopers and was hosted by Professor Zhou Xiaoqin, Dean of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, JLU. Representatives of the organizer, co-organizers and supporting institutions delivered speeches to extend congratulations to the successful closing of ICFDM 2022 and gratitude to all the guests and volunteers. Then, the conference awarded honorary certificates to Top 10 best 2021 NSFC projects in mechanical design and manufacturing discipline and Top 10 best papers of ICFDM 2022 selected in the conference. Zhejiang University was selected as the host of the 17thInternational Conference on Frontiers of Design and Manufacturing (ICFDM 2026). In the ceremony, the organizing committee of the 16thInternational Conference on Frontiers of Design and Manufacturing (ICFDM 2024) also reported on the preparation of the conference. With the wonderful variety performance of students from JLU, ICFDM 2022 came to an end.
