SMAE Organizes Fresh Postgraduate Students to Hear the Academic Report: AFM-base Manomachining

Date:2022-09-25

To enrich postgraduate students’ study life, expand their academic vision, and stimulate their interest in scientific research, the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering invited Prof. Emmanuel Brousseau of the School of Engineering, Cardiff University to give an academic report via Tencent Meeting. The academic report was held on the afternoon of 23 September 2022 and attended by a hundred teachers and students in total.

Emmanuel is a professor at the Cardiff School of Engineering. He is also the Head of Teaching for the Department of Mechanical and Medical Engineering within the School. His current research interest lies in the field of advanced manufacturing technologies, nano mechanical machining, and laser beam machining. He published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers (including over 60 journal papers), received a total of £1.2 million of project funding, and was awarded a five-year Academic Fellowship by the Research Councils UK in 2012.

Prof. Emmanuel Brousseau first introduced micro-nano machining technology: sub-millimeter, micron and nanometer components, as well as the optimization design, processing, assembly, system integration and application technology of the component system formed by these components. It mainly consisted of three parts: thin film deposition, graphic imaging, and graphic transitions. Then he reviewed the development history of micro and nano manufacturing technology for decades. Prof. Emmanuel Brousseau also introduced the application of the technology in data storage based on nano magnetism and the advantages of nano machining technology compared with traditional technologies, such as high density and low costs. The lecture ended with questions from the students. The professor gave detailed answers and some valuable academic suggestions to the online questions from the teachers and students.

The academic report deepened postgraduate students’ understanding ofmicro and nano manufacturing and expand their academic vision. The school hoped that fresh postgraduate students could leverage this opportunity to learn the difference of scientific research development and research method at home and abroad, and keep exploring and innovating for science in the future.
